PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE
Dear Members and friends,
Welcome to the website for our Congregation and
Synagogue. We appreciate your visit.
Our congregation is made up of a friendly group of
people who warmly welcome Jews of all backgrounds, not just Sephardi,
but everyone who embraces a religious service and culture in the
Sephardic tradition. Many of our members are of the Ashkenazi heritage.
We are a small congregation of 80 families, which
allows everyone to know each other intimately and to embrace each other
with fellowship that goes beyond the doors of the synagogue. Our social
interactions transcend religion into true friendships.
Our synagogue building is an architectural marvel,
constructed in a round design with natural acoustics and a light and
bright interior. Our location is near the city center and a short walk
from the downtown area.
We have been a congregation for nearly 100 years
and we cling to the traditions of our ancestors and that of our Sephardi
observance of religious rites. We have three zones of seating
accommodations to fit every need. We have separate seating for men,
women, and a section of family seating too. We also insert some Ladino
into the conduct of the services.
Please come and join us sometime!
Our synagogue is open on Friday night and Saturday
morning for weekly services. You are welcome to attend. Just call
503-227-0010 for more information. We will be happy to answer your
inquiries.
Sincerely yours,
Richard Matza, President

WELCOME
TO SEPHARDIC CONGREGATION AHAVATH ACHIM.
Since 1916, Ahavath Achim has been Oregon's only Sephardic Synagogue.
The traditions of many faces of Sephardic culture have come together in
this unique Congregation.
Our small Congregation is a friendly alternative to larger, impersonal
Synagogues. Ahavath Achim is anything but dull! In the best
Sephardic tradition, our services are filled with the melodies and songs
from Jews of Spanish/Ladino, Middle Eastern and Israeli decent. Our
services are highly participatory, and children are welcomed - they play a
vital part in both the services and Synagogue life. Our seating
arrangements allow for both separate seating for traditionalists, and
family seating for those who wish the option.
Don't think, though, that Ahavath Achim is just for the Sephardim!
Many of our members are of Ashkenazic decent, who find at Ahavath Achim
the kind of joy and zest for Judaism that they thought was lost.
Adding to the experience is our Synagogue building, with a round domed sanctuary
whose acoustics have become legendary in the area. You won't find a
more beautiful or warmer enviornment in which to pray!
We hold services on Friday evenings at 6:00PM, Saturday morning at 9:00AM,
and on holidays. Our Saturday Shabbat services are followed by a
free kiddush luncheon, where congregants and visitors get to know each
other in a relaxed atmosphere.
Please accept our invitation to visit Congregation Ahavath Achim.
You will have a pleasurable religious experience that your won't forget!
Richard
